A relative newcomer to the PICK community, I started with Advanced PICK in 1994, adding EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) functionality to an MRP (Manufacturing Resource Planning) system that was written entirely in Advanced PICK. I found PICK to be an excellent development environment with surprisingly exceptional performance.

At the time I started, the PICK MRP system had already been in service, doing a great job, for two decades. Because the PICK environment allowed us to easily modify and add to the programming, we were able to add features like EDI, so the system was always relevant and responsive to the evolving needs of the company. Indeed, while we did investigate alternatives, because the system was so easy to maintain and enhance, it continued to meet our needs and we stayed with that system through 2000. The company was absorbed by a larger firm in 2000, which opted to use their existing system which was relatively new to them and they had just paid a lot of money for. Had this not happened, I believe that PICK based MRP system could have easily been kept viable and competitive with the alternatives through today, while my understanding is that the larger firm has already had to migrate to another new system.

The moral of the story is when you start out with a system that's a good match to your needs, and you continually modify that system over the years to further meet your needs, you'll find that your system will be a much better match for you than anything else out there, for many, many years. From a business operations standpoint, this is clearly the most efficient, effective, and economical way to go.
